Tuinwijk was built in 1900. The neighbourhood is features many ground floor and upper floor houses and also family homes.
The neighbourhood is characterised by buildings in the style of the Amsterdamse School. Years of construction range between 1921 to 1940.
The neighbourhood includes the historic city centre between the canals (and several areas west of it).
In 1122, Utrecht got city rights and shortly thereafter the city walls and a defensive canal were constructed around Utrecht. Because of continuous growth, Utrecht was the biggest city of the Northern Netherlands until halfway the 16th century.
Not until the 19th century, the city developed itself with regard to construction. Also, utility services were, in the broadest sense, constructed and expanded. This improved the situation of the city quite a lot.
The city centre still boasts many hundreds of monuments of which many date back to the Middle Ages, including the Dom (112 metres high) and a city harbour of many kilometres with wharf cellars. The area within the former city walls is nowadays a protected city scape in its entirety.
The Central Station is situated on the westside of the city centre.
It is a cultural and scientific centre with seven nationally oriented museums, a renowned university and a theatre.
